Appropriate Ambition
Hey everyone,
I’ve been listening to former Disney CEO Bob Iger’s book The Ride of a Lifetime this week, and it’s yielded many helpful insights about work, life and management.
In particular, Iger had perceptive thoughts on being and managing an ambitious person, honed through 40 years rising in leadership at the same company. He says:
Dreaming about the future shouldn’t be a distraction from your current job. You can’t let ambition get too far ahead of opportunity. Tend to the responsibilities you do have. Do the job you have well. Be patient. Look for opportunities to pitch in and expand and grow. Make yourself one of the people—through attitude, energy and focus—that your bosses feel they have to turn to when a new opportunity arises.
I find this to be a helpful reminder, for moving up in a career but also in general. It’s easy to get sidetracked by many things, whether related to promotions or mundane day-to-day distractions. This week, I want to focus on the work. How about you?
Pete’s Picks ✅
App: Libby has been treating me well this week. We connect our library cards to the app and are able to rent audio and Kindle books through them. It’s a game changer if you don’t want to shell out for an Audible sub. See if your local library offers something similar.
TikTok Subculture: My wife tipped my off to the phenomenon of Cold Stone Creamery employees who make TikTok videos. Strangely addicting.
